Given the technical requirements of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, I suspect that this case will be dismissed in fairly short order. Still, I wonder how widespread the practice of "history sniffing" really is....

Will Netflix Kill the Internet? - BusinessWeek
An interesting article, although I must think that if folks as smart as Cisco are already predicting such an explosion in traffic, that the busy Internet infrastructure bees are hard at work increasing capacity to properly monetize all of this added usage (assuming that they have the access to capital to do so). What I would like to see, however, is an increased focus on educational applications--I have nothing against entertainment, but empowerment is not a bad goal either, don't you think?

Further on the de Inventione
To investigate: the role of officium and finis in de Inv. 1.6. Is it really just a question of "how" vs. "why," of means vs. ends?

The Influence of the de Inventione in the Middle Ages
Apparently, the de Inventione was quite influential in the Middle Ages. Why?
Cicero, De Inventione 1.1
Cicero begins his (surely youthful) de Inventione wondering whether the past glories of rhetoric and public persuasion had not done more harm than good: "not the least part" of the many disasters that had befallen Rome and the other great cities of the past had been brought on by the art of disertissimos homines.
Quaero: What, if anything, are the connotations of disertus for Cicero? Do they change over the course of his career?

A Slow Walk Through Cicero
I have decided to begin a systematic study of Cicero's works, with a view to understanding how they may apply to contemporary issues. A daunting task, but one I've danced around for years. My 1995 dissertation grappled with a number of Ciceronian texts, but I've never taken on the job of trying to understand the whole of Cicero's substantial output. I intend to use this blog to post my comments and questions about the texts I'm reading.

Thought for Today
I heard a very wise man say today that the right way to think about less self-centered thinking is not to think less of oneself, but to think of oneself less. Trite perhaps, but with no small measure of truth.

A Federal Approach to Gay and Transgender Youth Homelessness
Check out the new report issued by the Center for American Progress on the problem of LGBTQ youth homelessness and what the U.S. government should be doing to deal with it.
Government to Engage in BT
Well, it looks like the U.S. Government intends to engage in at least some form of behavioral targeting, no doubt for entirely benign purposes. (Does that sound sarcastic?)
Sigh
So much for my 2010 New Year's resolution to post more (and more frequently) on my blog. Oh well, I guess that I can try again.
